Female education ‘benefits the whole family’

Islamabad, Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) is amongst the four mega universities in Distance Learning Education System around the world, said Prof Dr Mehmood-ul-Hassan Butt, Vice Chancellor AIOU.

Talking to a delegation of Swedish journalist, writer and renowned poet Peter Curman here Monday, the VC said AIOU is not only spreading education but also creating knowledge for the sake of introducing a positive identification of the country at national, social and international levels.

“It’s one of the qualities of this University that it has 52 per cent female students and it gives more attention towards female education for the reason that male education benefits only one person while the education of a female benefits the whole family,” he said.

He said more than 200 theses of MPhil and PhD have been written so far by scholars under the supervision of Department of Iqbaliyat, adding that poets and writers are the assets of society because they struggle by their skills for decreasing the distance between different nations and societies and give the real shape of ‘Global Village’ to social conception.

Peter Curman, the Swedish poet, is one of the few writers who played his role in the closing in of the west and east with each other by his skill, highlighting Pakistani culture and literature in his books which is the reflection of his affection with the people of Pakistan.

Peter Curman said AIOU has risen with optimistic identification and is serving the country in the education sector more than other educational institutions.

AIOU gets authority to verify diplomas

ISLAMABAD, Hundreds of Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) graduates will heave a sigh of relief as the education ministry has authorised the institution to verify diploma certificates issued by it in various skill areas.

The authorisation, which augurs well for the career prospects of many diploma holders, was given following an intervention of the Federal Ombudsman Javed Sadiq Malik.

The intervention will also enable the Foreign Office in Islamabad and Pakistani missions abroad to attest the diploma certificates issued by the AIOU. Such verification is necessary for skilled workers seeking employment abroad.

A large number of diploma holders from the AIOU, especially those living abroad, were not able to get admissions to educational institutions to upgrade their technical skills or get jobs commensurate with their qualifications for want of verification of their diplomas.

The Inter Board Committee of Chairmen (IBCC) had refused to verify short course skill diplomas given by the AIOU for being beyond their purview. This left diploma holders in the lurch.

Career prospects of the diploma holders will significantly improve thanks to the initiative and efforts of Fiaz Ahmad, a diploma holder from the AIOU who in May complained to the ombudsman that the university had refused to attest his diploma on the grounds that it had no authority to do so.

On the directions of the ombudsman, the IBCC obtained the list of short courses from the AIOU and forwarded it to the Ministry of Education, which directly authorised the AIOU to verify the diplomas issued by it.

This has provided the much-awaited relief to several hundreds of students holding AIOU diplomas in 18 short courses.

The complainant, in his letter of thanks to Mr Malik, said “this decision will be a great help for thousands of students to better their educational and technical career.”
